Running can be a great way to stay in shape and enjoy the great outdoors. Unfortunately, however, it can also cause certain foot problems if you aren't careful. Protect your feet by preparing them in advance with these tips from your podiatrist Dr. Randy Bernstein at Nationwide Foot & Ankle Care in Livonia, MI.
1. Wear Quality Shoes
A great run starts with great running shoes. Are yours up for the challenge? Don't run in your old, worn out sneakers that have been sitting in your closet for years. Instead, purchase a high-quality pair of running shoes that fit comfortably and that offer excellent support. Break them in with a few short runs before taking your first long run, and replace them once they have 350 to 500 miles on them.
2. Find the Right Socks
When shopping for quality running shoes, don't forget to pick up several pairs of running socks as well. Avoid cotton socks, which can lead to blisters. Choose lightweight, moisture-wicking socks that will keep your feet dry and supported mile after mile.
3. Keep Your Feet Dry
Wet feet can lead to blisters and fungal infections such as athlete's foot--two conditions that can significantly impair your ability to run long distances. Avoid them by choosing the right socks, using powder or antiperspirant on your feet, and avoiding running through puddles.
4. Tape Your Feet
If your feet are prone to blisters, taping or bandaging them can help reduce the friction in problem areas. Ask your podiatrist at Nationwide Foot & Ankle Care in Livonia, MI for recommendations on which types of materials to use or which taping methods are most effective if you are unsure.
5. Watch Out for Obstacles
Whether you are running for one mile or twenty, chances are you will pass a few obstacles along the way. Protect your feet and the rest of your body by remaining alert to potential obstacles and safety hazards such as pot holes, traffic, dogs and uneven sidewalks. One wrong step and you could be facing significant injury.
Running can be fun and energizing, but it can also be dangerous too, if you don't take the proper precautions ahead of time. Use the five tips listed above and be sure to call Nationwide Foot & Ankle Care in Livonia, MI to speak to your podiatrist Dr. Bernstein if you have any questions or concerns.
