Ways To Prevent Athlete's Foot And How We Can Help

Here are some helpful tips to keep athlete’s foot from happening to you.

Athlete’s foot is a rather common fungal infection, causing a burning, itching, and uncomforting rash on the foot. Whether this is a problem that you deal with regularly or one you would simply like to avoid, our Livonia, MI, podiatrists Dr. Randy Semma, Dr. Michele Bertelle-Semma, and Dr. Stacy Stefansky are happy to provide you with the information you need to keep your feet healthy. Here are some simple things you can do to keep Athlete’s foot at bay,

Swap Out Shoes Regularly

Did you know that you shouldn’t wear the same shoes twice in a row? Make sure that once you are home that you give your feet time to air out. You may also want to sprinkle some antifungal powder in the shoes to help remove some of the moisture. Then you will want to let them air dry for at least 24 hours before putting them back on. You can also sprinkle some more antifungal powder inside before slipping your feet back into these shoes.

Nix Sweatiness

If your feet are particularly prone to sweating, then you should do your part to keep your feet as dry as possible. After all, fungus loves nothing more than warm, damp settings like your sweaty socks and shoes. Make sure that you purchase socks and shoes that are made from breathable materials. You may also want to wear sandals or open-toed shoes that can let your feet breathe.

Don’t Go Barefoot in Public

You must wear flip-flops or sandals whenever you are in public locker rooms, swimming pools, or showers to protect your feet from the fungus. Remember, fungus loves warm, moist environments like your gym’s shower and locker rooms so it’s important that you wear protective sandals and never go barefoot in these public settings.

If you find yourself dealing with fungal infections rather regularly or you also have diabetes, it’s a good idea to consult with your Livonia, MI, podiatrist to find safe, effective ways to treat your athlete’s foot. Our team can help you get the answers you need to protect your feet against fungal infections and more.
